On the occasion of Gabriele Münter's 150th birthday on February 19, 2027, the Gabriele Münter and Johannes Eichner Foundation is presenting a new exhibition at the Münter-Haus in Murnau. The accompanying catalogue illuminates the artist's work and personality through the lens of travel—as an expression of modernity and emancipation.

At the core of the publication are three formative stays abroad: the trip to Tunis (1904/05) and two periods in France (1906/07 and 1929/30). The latter journey—particularly Münter's time in the South of France—has received little research to date. Several of the selected paintings are being presented to the public for the first time in decades.

The mobility that characterized Münter's life had a lasting influence on her work, playing a key role in establishing—and maintaining—her art as an important vanguard position.

Gabriele Münter (1877-1962), whose work from the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) period is known worldwide, had a long and productive career. She was a master of painting as well as drawing, photography, and printmaking. This variety of media is matched by a stylistic and thematic range that testifies to Münter's love of artistic experimentation. After traveling extensively for decades, she settled in Murnau, Bavaria, where her creativity continued to unfold.
