With this photobook by Katalin Deér, the Fondation Beyeler shines a light on the experience visitors can have through encounters with art, nature, and architecture.

Over the course of three years, the renowned museum of modern and contemporary art near Basel invited photographer and artist Katalin Deér to quietly observe its ongoing evolution. With her sensitive eye for the extraordinary in the everyday, she has succeeded in capturing the unique atmosphere of this much-loved place.

Her photographs reveal the many relationships that connect the artworks with their surroundings and with the people who engage with them. The dialogue between interior and exterior spaces shifts with the changing seasons, as well as with the museum's exhibitions and cultural events. At the same time, the photographs document the Fondation Beyeler's own transformation: Renzo Piano's famous museum is expanded into a new architectural ensemble through the additions designed by Peter Zumthor. The architecture is respectfully integrated into the protected historic park, with its towering mature trees, lily ponds, historic buildings, and modern sculptures.

The photographs reflect an immediate perception and observation of art, nature, architecture, and the people who move through these spaces—and are, in turn, moved by them.
