Zhou Li is one of China's most representative contemporary female artists, renowned for her distinctive abstract paintings, mixed-media works, and large-scale installations. Her art not only explores the process by which the world, perception, and the self gradually emerge from the invisible, but also bridges Eastern traditional aesthetics with contemporary painting through the lens of female experience. By turning inward to examine authentic emotions and lived experiences, she has created a visual language that embodies both softness and strength, poetry and philosophy—offering a highly inspiring model for contemporary painting within a globalised context. This book aims to comprehensively illustrate how an Eastern female artist draws upon her own lived and cultural experiences to expand the established methodologies of contemporary painting.

Zhou Li graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1991. She lived and worked in France from 1995 to 2003. Since 2012, she has been a visiting professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Her mixed-media paintings and installations are based on natural philosophy, combining the free imagination of Romanticism with the beauty and strength of classical Chinese landscapes. While exploring the boundaries of contemporary aesthetics, she demonstrates a meticulous humanistic concern. Her works have been presented in major museums and institutions both domestically and internationally, including the National Art Museum of China, Guangdong Museum of Art, Yuz Museum Shanghai, Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, Lhasa Jibengang Art Center, and Château La Coste in France.
