In his photo book Just Faces, photographer Hartwig Klappert presents an impressive collection of portraits of international writers. At the literary festivals in Berlin (2002-2022), Odessa (2015-2019), and Leukerbad (2016-2019), he captured the faces of world literature—including literary giants such as Margaret Atwood, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Herta Müller. Klappert's works are not fleeting snapshots, but profound visual statements that magically captivate the viewer. The volume is complemented by essays by Eva Menasse and Sigrid Weigel, who reflect on the essence of the portrait as well as the timeless fascination and mysteries of the human face. A gripping work that celebrates the art of great portrait photography.

Hartwig Klappert (born 1947 in Siegen) worked initially as an art director after completing his studies in graphic design and has been a freelance photographer since 1978. From 1994 to 1997, he was a visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Braunschweig and now lives in Berlin and Brandenburg. His photographic work has received numerous awards (including ADC New York Gold).
