Game design as an art form
Worldbuilding examines the relationship between gaming and time-based media art. It is part of an ongoing research project by curator Hans Ulrich Obrist that has taken the form of exhibitions at Julia Stoschek Foundation in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Centre Pompidou Metz, France. Its presentation as the inaugural exhibition at Canyon in New York will be the largest transgenerational show of this scope to survey how contemporary artists worldwide are creating video games and using their aesthetics in other forms of media art. The exhibition at Canyon features works by over seventy artists, collectives, and video game creators, including Rebecca Allen, Laurie Anderson, Cory Arcangel, Ian Cheng, Cao Fei, Harun Farocki, Auriea Harvey / Tale of Tales, Ayoung Kim, Hideo Kojima, Harmony Korine, LuYang, Sturtevant, and Bill Viola.
This catalogue is the second publication to result from the Worldbuilding vision. Designed by WKSHPs, it will include texts by contemporary theorists, in addition to a series of conversations between exhibiting artists and legendary figures in gaming and new media art. It is conceptualized as an anthology and created in close collaboration with Canyon and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
